The University of Adelaide acquired the Schulz Building, along with the Hartley Building and Scott Theatre in 1991 as part of the merger with the City Campus of the South Australian College of Advanced Education (formerly the Adelaide College of Advanced Education and the Adelaide Teacher’s College amongst other names).
The Schultz Building was named in honour of Dr Adolf John Schulz, third Principal of the College (from 1909 to 1948). A man of great moral and intellectual rigor he was instrumental in shaping the course which teacher training was to follow for nearly forty years. Closely associated with the University, he also left the sum of £4,500 for the establishment of prizes and awards in German and Education.
His Excellency, Sir Edric Bastyan, Governor of South Australia officially opened the Schultz Building on 25 September 1964. It was designed by architects and engineers of the Public Buildings Department and is constructed using a steel-frame with pre-cast concrete exposed aggregate slabs. They are faced with aluminium curtain walling designed to reduce heat.
For better or worse the 14-story Schulz Building (with a lift that only goes up to the 11th floor, due to the fact that the Caretaker’s Residence was originally located on this level) has become a visual landmark of the University skyline. Once this building was the tallest in Adelaide (at a height of 175 feet from ground level) and was the first to require the use of a tower-crane during construction.
