John William Salmond
John William Salmond was born on 3 December 1862 at North Shields, England.[1]
After completing his Master of Arts from the University of Otago,[2] John attended the University College, London as Gilchrist Scholar in 1883.[3] He received his Bachelor of Laws in 1887, taking first place honours in his class.[4]
Returning to New Zealand, John practiced as a lawyer writing Essays in Jurisprudence and Legal History (Stevens & Haynes, 1891) and First Principles of Jurisprudence (Stevens & Haynes, 1893) for which he was recognised as a Fellow of University College, London.[5]
In 1897 John was appointed as Professor of Laws, University of Adelaide,[6] until he resigned in December 1905 to take up the position of Professor of Laws at Victoria University College, Wellington.[7] He is also known for writing Jurisprudence or the Theory of the Law (Stevens & Haynes, 1902) and The Law of Torts (Stevens and Haynes, 1907).[8]
John Salmond was later appointed to the Supreme Court of New Zealand in 1920[9] and passed away on 24 September 1924, Wellington, New Zealand.[10]
In 1964 the University of Adelaide named its law library after Salmond. The Sir John Salmond Law Library is located on the ground and lower ground floors of the Ligertwood building on North Terrace.
