Charleton Yeatman was born on 27 July 1887 in Auburn, South Australia. He attended St Peters College and then University of Adelaide, completing both an M.B. and B.S. in 1910.
In 1913 he married Mignon D. Jacob in Adelaide.
On May 20 1915, he enlisted in the 1st Australian Imperial Force in Adelaide, where he was allotted to the Australian Army Medical Corps.
He was promoted a Lieutenant Colonel at the Australian General Hospital in Harefield, Middlesex during WWI, and in WW2 was appointed as the hospitals' Commanding Officer.
During his military service he was awarded several medals, including the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1919.
