Frederick William Pennefather was born on 29 April 1852 in Dublin, Ireland.[1]
He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1874 and a Master of Laws in 1877.[2] In 1877 Frederick was called to the Bar of Lincoln’s Inn, and he practiced until 1881 when his health declined and he immigrated to South Australia.[3]
Frederick was the Private Secretary of the Governor of South Australia, Sir William Jervois from 1881 to 1883,[4] and he worked in a similar position for the Governor of New Zealand from 1883 to 1886.[5]
From 1888 to 1889 he was appointed Lecturer in Laws at the University of Adelaide, and was then appointed the first Professor of Laws, from 1890 to 1896.[6] Frederick returned to the United Kingdom for his health and resigned from his position in 1896 due to ongoing health concerns.[7] [8]
Frederick Pennefather passed away on 6 February 1921 at his family’s estate Rathsallagh, County Wicklow, Ireland.[9]
