Regulations for the Diploma in Physical Education were allowed in 1940 and a Certificate and Diploma were offered in 1941 by the Faculty of Arts.
In 1943, a Board of Physical Education was formed to oversee the awards. The Board's membership included the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and the professors and lecturers in control of the subjects of the curriculum. Its role was to advise Council on all matters relating to the studies, lectures and examinations in Physical Education.
In 1948, the Board's name changed to the Board of Studies in Physical Education and in 1959 it was replaced by the Department of Physical Education.
The Diploma was abolished in 1969 and no new enrolments were accepted. Regulations for the Diploma were repealed in 1972.
