Richard Smart graduated from Sydney University with Honours in Agricultural Science (B.Sc.Agr (Hons II)) in 1966 and, subsequently has earned another three degrees. His 1973 M.Sc (Hons) from Macquarie University in Sydney was awarded to a study of sunlight use by vineyards.
Most of Richard’s career has been in viticultural research and teaching, including Griffith, NSW, Cal Poly and Bordeaux Universities.
From 1974-1982, he was at Roseworthy Agricultural College as Lecturer in Viticulture, then Senior Research Fellow and then Dean, Faculty of Oenology.
Dr Smart was instrumental in developing a three-year Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Oenology at Roseworthy College.
He was also Government Viticultural Scientist in New Zealand, 1982-1990.
Together with colleagues, Dr Smart formed the New Zealand Society for Viticulture and Oenology in 1987.
He has won various awards, including 2018 Fellow of the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology.
He is currently based in Victoria and runs his own consulting business, Smart Viticulture.
