Walter Richard Birks was educated at Prince Alfred College. He entered Adelaide University in 1905 and went to Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1907 where he completed a Bachelor of Science (Agriculture) degree in 2010. He was Dux of Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1908.
He returned to Roseworthy as a demonstrator in the science laboratory.
He performed research on the use of superphosphate in the germination of small seeds.
He was wounded in World War I.
Birks was appointed Principal of Roseworthy Agricultural College in May, 1927, in succession to Mr. W. J. Colebatch, who had been made a member of the Irrigation Commission. Mr Birks was a graduate of Roseworthy. He arrived in Adelaide early in July, 1927 and took up his duties shortly afterward.
Birks was forced to resign as Principal in 1932, after students' dissatisfaction culminated in strike action at the College.
