Henry Gordon Prest was born on 17 October 1989 in Port Pirie South Australia. He was educated at Kyre College and Prince Alfred College. He then completed his medical degree (M.B., B.S.) in December 1925 at the University of Adelaide.
Prest played for the Adelaide University Football Club, winning the Naylor medal in 1922. He also played for the Adelaide University Cricket Club and was a member of the intervarsity cricket team (vice-captain in 1922, captain in 1923 and 1925). Prest also played for the Adelaide University Lacrosse Club and was a member of the Sports Association General Committee (1921-1925).
He was enlisted as a Private in World War I in May 1918 and discharged as a Gunner in April 1919. Prest was awarded the British War Medal in 1920.
