NameWorld War One Memorial Project - Player Biographies - Adelaide University Football Club - Adelaide University Cricket Club - "Those Who Fell"DateCompiled 2021Description
Coinciding with the Centenary of Anzacs the incentive behind the series of biographical publications is the Adelaide University Football and Cricket Clubs' desire to honour their players who served in the Great War (1914 - 1918). These brave men put on hold their academic, professional and sporting careers for King and Country in the name of peace and freedom.
In August 2014, the two Clubs formed the AUFC/AUCC WWI Memorial Committee and set about the task of identifying all its players who served and preparing life-stories for all. This was to ensure their sacrifices and further contributions to society would be documented, safely archived and made available for future generations.
On Anzac Day 2015, the Centenary of the Gallipoli landing, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the Adelaide University Oval Pavilion and this was followed by the erection of a picket fence between the pavilion and the scoreboard, with each picket bearing a plaque with the name of an AUFC/AUCC player who served.
In compiling the life-stories, extensive research was conducted of the University of Adelaide's archives, as well as newspaper reports of football and cricket teams, war service records and family histories, school archival records, and other sources to identify the players who served in WWI.
This collection provides the stories of those twenty men who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.
