Chris undertook M.Ed, MA and PhD degrees focussed on feminist theory, gender and sexuality, although over time she began to also focus on masculinity studies. She enrolled in the first Women's Studies course in Australia in 1973 at Flinders University and was the first to complete a PhD in Women's Studies in Australia in 1992. She was a member of the Women's Studies Department at the University of South Australia from 1987 through its merger into the new University of Adelaide Women's Studies Department in 1992. Chris was then transferred to the Politics Department of the University of Adelaide in 1998 and became a Professor in Politics in 2012.
She was founder and then became Co-director (with Martha Augoustinos) of the Fay Gale Centre for Research on Gender at the University of Adelaide (2009-2014). Chris says today that her career remains a surprise and that she could never have imagined any of it as a young woman.
