Myra was born in Hokitika, South Island, New Zealand. She started her academic career graduating from University of Otago, Dunedin NZ in 1957 and culminating in 1998 with her PhD, Midlife Women's Lived Experience: Their Patterns of Health, Leisure and Enjoyment. Myra was one of the founding members of staff who started the Women's Studies program at Salisbury College of Advanced Education (CAE) which later was incorporated into an amalgamated grouping in University of Adelaide. She taught courses in women's health, leisure, recreation and counselling for 20 years.
Myra has been a passionate bush walker all her life and assisted in the development of the Heysen Trail, Pioneer Women's Trail, and various other walking trails in Adelaide. Myra has walked in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many other countries in the world.
