Susan was Director of the Research Centre for Women’s Studies at Adelaide University (1983-2000), and in that capacity Associate-Professor in the Women’s Studies Department from its establishment in 1992 until her retirement in 2003.
While Director of the Centre, Susan founded and became founding editor of Australian Feminist Studies (established in 1985, now published by Routledge). She also founded the bi-annual Magarey Medal for Biography in 2005. Susan became an Adjunct-Professor in 2004 and Professor Emerita in 2012. In 2006 Susan was awarded the Order of Australia [AM] for pioneering Women’s Studies as an academic field.
She describes her life as ‘ambivalent, ambiguous, androgynous, amorous, ironic’.
