Dee is one of an estimated 500,000 children and child migrants who were in out-of-home care during the 20th century. She is the first in her two families (birth and foster care) to go to university which she did as a mature age student and primary carer of three children. Dee graduated from the University of Adelaide with a BA (Women's Studies) in 1998 and then completed a Bachelor (2000), Honours (2002) and PhD (2008) in Theology at Flinders University. Dee returned to the University of Adelaide in 2011 to teach social research and sociology in Gender Studies and Social Analysis (GSSA).
