Aileen Constance Ingleby was born 28 August 1898.[1] Both Aileen’s father, Rupert Ingleby, and her grandfather, served as King’s Counsels.[2]
She attended Mount Gambier Grammar School,[3] before enrolling in law at the University of Adelaide. It was while playing on the women's hockey team at the University that Aileen encouraged Dorothy Somerville to enrol in a law degree.[4]
Aileen became the second woman to graduate from the University of Adelaide Law School and was called to the Bar in 1921,[5] after which she was articled to her father at his firm, Ingleby and Wallman.[6]
Her law career would be short lived however, with Aileen only practicing for a few years before marrying Reverend John Leslie Bond in 1924.[7]
Aileen died on 13 September 1998 in South Australia.[8]
Aileen’s grandson, James Crawford, was also an Adelaide Law School graduate, and became the second Australian to be elected to the International Court of Justice in 2014.[9]
