Among the University Library’s special collections is an eight-volume set of orchid paintings by Rosa Fiveash (1854–1938). Fiveash painted the orchids according to the direction of Dr Richard S Rogers, and her most famous works reflect the importance of collaboration.
Fiveash was born in Adelaide in 1854 and studied at the Adelaide Art School of Design from 1881 to 1888. She taught herself the art of botanical illustration. She became renowned for her expertise in wildflowers, her favourite subject.
Rogers, a University graduate, pioneered the use of X-rays and hypnotism in medicine, but also began a study of Australian orchids in the early 1900s. His hobby turned to passion, and he soon became a leading orchid authority.
The University Library’s copy of Orchid paintings, filled with beautiful and scientifically accurate illustrations, preserves Fiveash and Rogers’ 30 year collaboration.
