Vignette 109: Ingkarni Wardli
VIGNETTE
In 2010, the University opened a new engineering, computer, and mathematical sciences building with contemporary teaching facilities, later named Ingkarni Wardli. It became the first building on our North Terrace Campus to have a Kaurna name.
The $100 million facility was awarded Australia’s first 6 Star and Green Star rating for an education building by the Green Building Council of Australia. The 11,000 m2, nine-level building was designed by DesignInc Adelaide and built by Hindmarsh Construction Australia.
It achieved its rating for a range of innovative sustainable design features: including thermal chimneys, underfloor cooling pipes, recycled rainwater, fresh air, building performance monitoring, and its own tri-generation power plant. The building demonstrates our strong commitment to environmental sustainability.
The name Ingkarni Wardli was given during National Reconciliation Week in 2012, in a special place-naming ceremony. The name means ‘place of learning or enquiry’ and recognises the special relationship that the University shares with Kaurna people, the original custodians of the land on which the University rests.
The building offers a café, computer labs, exhibition area, teaching spaces, and 24/7 access to resources. It also provides state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, setting our students up for productive and successful futures.
