Vignette 106: On Dit
VIGNETTE
Founded in 1932 as the University’s official student publication, On Dit is an essential ongoing publication collecting student opinions, news, and social commentary. Taking its title from the French expression roughly translated as ‘we say’, On Dit has become the official mouthpiece of the University Students’ Union.
On Dit is the third oldest publication of its kind in the country, leading the way in student discourse and representation. In the early years, the publication assumed a more political aspect and from 1934, the voice of On Dit could be as courageous as it could be controversial. On occasion, printing has been halted due to internal dissent, and the publication has also attracted threats and litigation. Today, On Dit’s team is elected annually through a democratic media election.
On Dit remains a unique chronicle of student history and community. From news, political commentary, and opinion pieces, to narratives, poetry, art, and satire, there is a page open to every student, giving them diverse and relatable voices to help explore their shared identity and sense of self.
