The Adelaide Rural Clinical School (ARCS) at the University was established in 2003 with a vision to bridge the gap in rural healthcare. Celebrating 20 years in 2023, ARCS has been a leader in providing medical students with a unique year-long placement experience, preparing them for rural and remote practice.
ARCS operates across 10 rural sites in South Australia and Broken Hill, offering hands-on clinical placements and formal training. Led by the inaugural Chair of Rural Health, David Wilkinson, the School has become a cornerstone for medical education, teaching skills in problem-solving, clinical reasoning, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Alumni from this school of medical study are three times more likely to work in rural areas post-graduation, with nearly 70% choosing country South Australia. The program’s impact extends beyond medical practice, as students actively engage in community events, sports, and education.
ARCS improves healthcare accessibility in South Australia through student contributions and elevates health services in rural areas.
