Vignette 53: Doctor Who electronic music composer at the Elder Conservatorium

Tristram Cary OAM (1925–2008) was a pioneer in electronic music and an acclaimed composer, building a legacy through his contributions to the University and through his unique musical compositions. 

His multifaceted career spanned six decades and two continents. After serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, he delved into electronic music, founding one of the earliest electronic music studios post-war. Cary produced iconic compositions, such as The Daleks pieces for the popular British TV series Doctor Who. 

In 1974, Cary joined the University’s Elder Conservatorium, imparting his knowledge of electronic composition to music scholars until his retirement in 1986. His move to Australia saw him shift his focus towards concert works. During his tenure at the University, he restructured the electronic music courses, making the University the first institution in South Australia capable of producing digital recordings. 

Beyond his academic contributions, Cary initiated further developments in electronic music by co-designing the VCS3 synthesizer. Today, Cary’s pioneering spirit lives on in the continued innovation and exploration of electronic music.
