McMillan Constructions donated $4.55 million in 2020, to support financially challenged students pursuing STEM studies in honour of their late founder, Raymond McMillan, a University alumnus.
This is one of the largest contributions ever made by a private company in the University’s history. It funds two five year scholarships in civil engineering annually: The Raymond McMillan Civil Engineering High Achiever Scholarships, valued at $25,000 per annum, and the Raymond McMillan Civil Engineering Scholarships, valued at $15,000 per year, plus $5,000 in the first year. The scholarships are given based on financial need, with priority given to students from South Australia.
In addition to the scholarships, the donation establishes a teacher-in-residence program. This initiative, integrated within the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology, aims to promote STEM skills and careers to high school students.
Raymond McMillan, a bright student, received a scholarship after a chance encounter with a university lecturer at his high school. Following McMillan’s passing in 2019, his family business honoured his legacy by supporting future STEM professionals.
