Ruby Hammond

Ruby Florence Hammond PSM (1936–1993) was a proud Tanganekald and Arrernte woman and a respected Aboriginal activist, public servant and advocate for justice. Born in Kingston SE, South Australia, she grew up navigating both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities, an experience that shaped her lifelong commitment to equity and cross-cultural understanding.

After early experiences of racism in the workforce, Ruby dedicated her career to advancing the rights of Aboriginal people. She became a leading voice within the Council of Aboriginal Women of South Australia and later joined the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement, where she served as Executive Director. She championed land rights, legal advocacy and social justice, arguing that equality must address the broader social and structural causes of disadvantage.

Ruby later completed a degree in Aboriginal Affairs Administration and held senior roles in the South Australian public service, including contributing to the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. In 1988, she became the first South Australian Aboriginal person to stand for election to the Federal Parliament.

Recognised for her leadership and service, Ruby was named South Australian Woman of the Year (1977) and awarded the Public Service Medal in 1993. The South Australian electoral district of Hammond was named in her honour, reflecting her enduring legacy as a trailblazer for Aboriginal rights and representation.
