Early dual tube brass microscope (dual tubes allow two people to view item being examined ?). Rectangular stage with two clips present. 'U' or 'V' shaped base. Small brass tool attached to stage to assist with moving the item/s being examined.
This is a Victorian Lacquered Brass compound dual tube microscope. Made in 1875 by R&J Beck, this object was donated in 2010. This microscope could have been used by both medical and/or science students as well as professors within the University between the late 1800s and early 1900s. The addition of a second tube allowed two people to use the microscope at once, possibly a teacher and student at the same time. Therefore, contributing to belief that this would have been used for education. The mirror located at the bottom of the microscope was to enable light to be reflected up underneath a slide placed in the microscope which gave clearer pictures of the slide.
