PART I.
PREFACE.



THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE was established by Act of
Parliament[...]hroughuut the British Empire as if granted by any
University in the United Kingdom.

It was the first University in Australia to provide for the
granting of degre[...]as authorised by Act of Parliament
in 1880.

The University grants degrees in Arts, Science, Law, Medicine,
a[...]ic and in Mining-Engineering
and Metallurgy.

The University owes its origin to themunificence and public
spi[...]made in the Act of Ineorpuration (“The
Adelaide University Act, 1374”) for an annual grant from the public[...]l funds then
or afterwards to he possessed by the University, but not exceeding
in any one year the sum of £l[...]e acres in the City of Adelaide as a site for the University
buildings were prnvided for.

At first the Professor-ships founded in the University were four
in number, their subjects being[...]

The acndemical work of the University was commenced in
March, 1876. the number of 111a.[...]Thomas Elder, G.(1M.G., made a second gift to the
University amounting to £10,000, ior the foundation of a School of
Medicine. The University Council thereupon estebliehed .1 011111:

available for the general purposes of the UniverSity. An Elder

Diploma in these subjects. "

The University is governed by a Council which usually consists
o[...]ted by examination since the
establishment of the University is 207. The number of under-
graduates in the yea[...]studying at the Elder Conservatctium, of
whom in 1899 there were 300. The teaching staff of the University
comprises 8 Professors and 12 Lecturers, and that of the Elder
Conservatoriunl, 8.

Facilities for University examinations have been extended to
pupils in the[...]o been
given in country centres as well as at the University.

TH.E UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE was established by Act of
Parliament[...]hroughout the British Empire as if granted by any
University in the United Kingdom.
It was the first University in Australia to provide for the
granting of degre[...]s authorised by Act of Parliament
in 1880.
The University grants degrees in Arts, Science, Law, Medicine,

The University owes its origin to the munificence and public
