PREFACE.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE was established by Act of

Parliament[...]roughout the British
Empire, as if granted by any University in the United Kingdom. An
additional Royal Charte[...]neering, and Bachelor and Master of
Surgery.

The University owes its origin to the munificcncc and public sp[...]e per cent. on the cnpital funds
possessed by the University, but not to exceed in any one year the sum
of £1[...]e acres in the City of Adelaide as a site
for the University buildings were given. The country lands were
subs[...]£4,000. In order
to meet the urgent needs of the University the Government, in 1920.
provided an additional g[...]the departments of Physics and Engineering.

The University grants degrees in Arts, Economics, Science, Law,[...]880.

At first the Prolessorships founded in the University were four in
number, their subjects being[...]
[...]g lectures filty-two. The foundation-stone of the University
buildings was laid in 1879, and the buildings wer[...]1892 Robert Burr Smith, Esquire, presented to the
University £9,000 for the purposes of the Library. In 1920[...]Sir Thomas Elder died in 1897, hequeathing to the University the
sum of £65,000, his total gifts to it nmount[...]as left available
for the general purposes of the University The Elder Conservatorium
of Music was accordingly[...]es necessitated large and costly additions to the
University Buildings in 1901, 1902, and 1912. By an agreemen[...]ime to time, in the opinion of the Council of the University, tend to
the better development of the natural re[...]his valuable Urrbrae Estate at Glen Osmond to the University.
The estate comprises an area of 134 acres and a mansion house; the
western half is to he held by the University in perpetuity as a park
[...]Waite, in [918, transferred to trustees,
{or the University, 4.900 shares in Elder, Smith, 6! CD.. Ltd. The s[...]e. which is at
present valued at £16,099, to the University of Adelaide to be used for
the same purpose as th[...]bscribed by a number of citizens. was paid

the residue of his estate to the University for the encouragement and

The University is governed by a Council, which, from its commenc[...]th Australia, who is ex—oflicio Visitor to the
University.

The number of graduates admitted by examination since the establish-
ment of the University is 3,4.50, and the number admitted ad eundem

16. The sum of £4,000, paid to the University as aforesaid by the

said John Howard Angas, shall be invested in such a manner as to entitle
the University to the annual grant. equal to five pounds per ce[...]eon, under the fifteenth section of the Adelaide University

of the Council for the purposes of the University.

17. These Statutes may be varied from time to t[...]e and the John Howard
Clark Scholar.

Whereas the University of Adelaide has received and has invested the

1. This Act may be cited as the “University of Adelaide Act, 1935.”

Acts Consolidated and[...]ntended—
” Council " means the Council of the University of Adelaide;
“ Senate " means the Senate of the University of Adelaide;
"University” means the University of Adelaide.

Incorporation and Continuance of University,

4. (1) The University established at Adelaide pursuant to The Adelaide
University Act is hereby continued.

(2) The University shall consist of a Council and a Senate.
(3) The University shall be a body politic and corporate by the
name of ” The University of Adelaide ” and by that name-—

Power to Confer Degrees.

19. (1) The University shall have power to confer upon any person

of the University, the several degrees nf Bachelor of Arts, Master[...]of Dental Science, and such other degrees as the University by
Statute or Regulation may constitute.

(2) The University shall have power, without examination, but in
accordance with the Statutes and Regulations of the University, to admit
to degrees which the University has power to confer, persons who have
graduated at any other University.

Residence of Undergraduates During Terms.

22. The Governor shall be the Visitor of the University, and shall have

24, (1) There shall be paid to the University every year out of the
general revenue of the Stat[...]sum of twenty thousand pounds contributed to
the University by Walter Watson Hughes, pursuant
to the indentur[...]rom time to time given to and in—
vested by the University upon trusts for the purposes
of the University; and

(c) the value of property, real or personal, of the University
or vested in or held by trustees for the purposes of
the UniverSity, except the real property granted to the
University in pursuance of section 16 of The Adelaide
University Act, and of The University Site Act, 1876;

*25. (1) In addition to any other sums payable to the University out

Conditions of Grant.

*26. All moneys paid to the University under section 25 shall be deemed
to be paid on th[...]The Waite Agricultural Research Institute of the University shall
conduct researches in cereal breeding, plan[...]upon between
the Minister of Agriculture and the University, make and
report to the Minister the result of an[...]equires to be so made and reported
upon;

Iv. The University shall maintain a course in agricultural science

ture of the University, audited in such manner as the Governor may

every Statute and Regulation oi the University allowed by the Governce
pursuant to this Act, shall be laid in every year before Parliament,

30. The land granted to the University pursuant to section 16 of The

held upon the trusts for the purposes of the University approved bv the
Governor.

PREFACE.


THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE was established by Act of
Parli[...]roughout the British
Empire, as if granted by any University in the United Kingdom. An
additional Royal[...]ring, and Bachelor and Master of
Surgery.
The University owes 1ts origin to the m•mificencc and public s[...]ve acres in the City of Adelaide a a site
for Lhe University buildings were given. The coun try lands[...]000. In order
to meet the urge.nt .n eeds of tJ1c University tbe Governmen·t, in 1920,
provided an addi tiona[...]he departments of Physics and Engineering.

The University grants degrees in Arts, Economics, Science, La,v,[...]80.
At first the Professorships founded in the University were four in

[...]g lectures fifty-two. The foundation-stone of the University
buildings was laid in 1879, and the buildingi'l w[...]2 Robert R .. rr Smith, Esquire, presented to the
University £9,000 for the purposes of the Library. In 1920[...]Sir Thomas Elder died in 1897, bequeathing to the University the
sum of £65,000, his total gifts to it amount[...]as left available
for the general purposes of the University. The Elder Conservatorium
of Music was accord[...]es necessitated large and costly additions to the
University Buildings in 1901, 1902, and 1912. By an agreemen[...]is vn luable Urrbrae Estate at Glen Osmond to the University.
The estate comprises an area of 134 acres and a mansion hou~re ; the

19. (1) The University shall have power to confer upon any person
