Elder Hall

A bequest from Sir Thomas Elder of 20,000 pounds in 1897 made the erection of this Florentine Gothic Revival style building for a Conservatorium of Music possible. The foundation stone was laid by the Governor, Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, on 26 September 1898.  The building was completed in February 1900 and officially opened in September of that year by Lord Tennyson (who was Governor of South Australia).

Prior to the erection of Bonython Hall, Elder Hall was used for ceremonial purposes as well as concerts and public events. It houses a Casavant Fréres organ installed during renovations in 1977 – 1979. A statue of Sir Thomas Elder is outside Elder Hall.
