DESCRIPTION
NameLigertwood BuildingType of PlaceBuildingLocationNorth Terrace CampusUnique IDUA-00007128Date1967Description
The unprecedented growth experienced by the University in increased student enrolments in the twenty years following the Second World War caused a critical shortage of accommodation. Where possible new buildings were built or extended. Following closely after the construction of the multi-storied Napier Building, the Ligertwood Building was completed in 1967 with funds provided through the Australian Universities Commission.
It was named in honour of Sir George Ligertwood (1888-1966), Supreme Court Judge, member of the University Council, and Chancellor of the University between 1961 and 1966.
Originally it was designed as a five-story building (to accommodate the Faculty of Law and the Departments of Classics and Philosophy). Two additional floors were added in 1995.
