Napier Building
DESCRIPTION
Type of PlaceBuildingLocationNorth Terrace CampusUnique IDUA-00007149Date1958Description
The Napier Building is named in honour of Sir Mellis Napier, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1942 – 1967) and Chancellor of the University (1948 – 1961).
The building was erected in stages between 1958 and 1965 with State and Commonwealth grants recommended by the Australian Universities Commission.
It is a ten storey building constructed of two parts — a podium containing lecture theatres and teaching rooms and a tower with offices and smaller seminar rooms. The Napier Building was designed following the modernist principles of the late 1950s and 1960s, encapsulated through vertical lines, and the use of connecting bands of orange tiles.
