The Faculty of Medicine was established by statute in 1885. Statute Chapter X was substantially amended from December 1956, and the composition of the Faculty was more formally defined and each Faculty gained representation from the Deans of other Faculties, and the Chairman of Education Committee and the Head of each Department in the Faculty became ex officio members.
In 1999, the statute was repealed and a new one substituted. All Faculties were to have a Faculty Board with membership categories and constitution approved by the Vice-Chancellor; Board of Studies to have membership categories and constitution approved by the Vice-Chancellor, and Faculty and School Advisory Boards as determined by the Vice-Chancellor.
The Dean of the Faculty convenes and presides over the Faculty Board, which advises the Council through Academic Board on all matters relating to the degrees, diplomas and other academic awards for which it is responsible; all questions relating to the entry requirements for persons wishing to undertake courses within it and the standing and progress of students enrolled in the courses; and its academic goals and priorities.
In 1999, the Faculty was re-named Health Sciences and consisted of the Medical School and Dental School. Later the School of Nursing, School of Psychology and School of Public Health were added to the Faculty.
A further name change occurred in 2016 to Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.
