The Department of Chemical Engineering commenced in 1963.
It had previously been the Department of Mining, Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering but underwent a name change when the teaching of Mining and Metallurgy, which had been declining in relation to Chemical Engineering, ceased with the resignation of Professor Edgar Clynton Ross Spooner.
The first Chair was Robert William Francis Tait and the number of students grew significantly during the Department's first 20 years.
On 1 July 2002 the Department was renamed the School of Chemical Engineering.
