Adelaide University Engineering Society

First established in 1923,  the objects of the Adelaide University Engineering Society were to:

(1) encourage social life amongst those students and others connected with the University who are interested in Engineering;

(2) promote the study and knowledge of Engineering generally;

(3) encourage students in public speaking on Engineering subjects and in preparation of papers pertaining thereto.

Students were invited to attend the several meetings held during the year of the Student and Junior Section of the Institute of Engineers, Australia.

A Freshers' Social was held early in the first term, at which Freshers were given the opportunity of meeting their lecturers and fellow-students.

An Annual General Meeting of the Society was also held (the month held varied over the years). Visits were also made at frequent intervals throughout the year to places of interest to students. 

The First Officers of the Society were:

• Thomas Albert Farrent (President)
• Rayond Redvers Van Senden (Hon Secretary)
• Alan Francis Clark McKechnie (Hon Treasurer).

The Society commenced annually publishing its own magazine in 1945, wich was variously titled Adelaide University Engineering Society Magazine (1945-1948), Varsity Engineer (1949-1950), The Journal of the Adelaide University Engineering Society (1950) and Hysteresis (1957-1980).
