NameDepartment of Electrical EngineeringUnique IDUA-00007212Date Established1946Date Abolished1982Description
The Department of Electrical Engineering was established in 1946, along with the Department of Civil Engineering and replacing the Department of Engineering.
In 1943, South Australian Industry, including General Motors Holden and the Adelaide Electric Supply Company, donated money towards the establishment of two new Chairs in Engineering.
Recruitment for the new Chair of Electrical Engineering commenced after the end of the Second World War hostilities in 1945. Professor Eric Osborne Willoughby was appointed by Council in 1946 and held the position until he retired at the end of 1972.
In July 1982 Council approved a proposal by the Department to change its name to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering to clarify confusion over the education programs offered. The Bachelor of Engineering stream was also renamed Electrical and Electronic Engineering but Professor Bogner's position retained the title of Chair of Electrical Engineering.
The Department was renamed the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering on 1 July 2002.
