The discipline of Botany commenced in 1903 with the introduction of a Special Course in Botany, taught by Ellen Ida Benham.
In 1912 Theordore George Bentley Osborn was appointed as Professor of Botany and from the following year Botany was offered as a subject with the Bachelor of Science.
On 1 January 1999 the Department of Botany merged with the Department of Zoology to form the Department of Environmental Biology.
