Dr. Gunson was born at Angas street, Adelaide, in the house where his father, the late Dr. J. M. Gunson, had practised. Dr. J. M. Gunson was one of the State's earliest settlers, having arrived from Ireland in 1856. The late Dr. J. B. Gunson graduated from the Adelaide University in 1893. He received his earlier education at the Christian Brothers' College and in Paris. Post-graduate work earned him the additional degrees of M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P.
Dr. Gunson was one of the first men to use X-ray apparatus at the Adelaide Children's Hospital, and for more than 25 years he was honorary physician there. He practised in Adelaide and was honorary assistant physician at the Adelaide Hospital from 1909 until 1916. For a number of years Dr. Gunson was honorary consulting obstetrician at the Queen's Home, Adelaide.
Dr. Gunson was honorary secretary and later vice-president of the South Australian branch of the British Medical Association. He was responsible for the arrangement of the B.M.A. congress held in Adelaide in 1905.
J.B. Gunson was a founding member of the Adelaide Medical Students Society and Clinical Lecturer, Medical Diseases of Children from 1916 to 1927.
