Charles William Hooper was born at Gumeracha on 13 April 1884, the second son of Mr John Hooper of Queen St, Norwood.
He was educated at Prince Alfred College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Adelaide in 1904.
Hooper played four league games for Norwood Football Club in 1903. He also played with the Adelaide University Football Club and was on the Intervarsity team (1904).
Hooper was later employed in Wallaroo in the assay office of the Wallaroo and Moonta Mining and Smelting Company.
He enlisted in the 10th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force and embarked for overseas in June 1915.
Hooper served at Gallipoli and rose to the rank of Captain before he was killed in action near Pozieres in France during the Battle of the Somme on 25 July 1916. He is buried between Pozieres and Bazentin and his memorial cross is erected at the Pozieres British cemetery.
