Clarence Swann Padman was born in Middleton, South Australia on 25 May 1893, son of Samuel Waterhouse Padman and Annie Elizabeth Jane (nee Ragless).
He started his schooling at Middleton but then moved to Adelaide and boarded with his aunty while he studied at Norwood High School. He later went to Adelaide High School before studying for a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Adelaide.
Clarence played for the Adelaide University Football Club (1914) and Cricket Club (summer of 1914/1915 season).
He was a teacher at Norwood School before being appointed to the staff of Moonta High School.
Clarence enlisted on 14 June 1915 and joined the 8th Field Ambulance and later the 15th Field Ambulance. On 31st August 1916, he joined the 8th Machine Gun Company.
He was killed in action near Gueudecourt on 29 November 1916.
