James Anderson Yuill was born at Kent Town South Australia on 18 June 1887. After leaving St Peter's College he was a shipping clerk with the Adelaide Steamship Company at Murat Bay, Ceduna, South Australia before then proceeding to Sydney where he was associated with the well-known shipping and export firm of G. S. Yuill & Co.
James commenced studies in commerce at the University of Adelaide in 1911.
James played with the Adelaide University Cricket Club in the 1911/12 Season.
James enlisted on 10 August 1915 and joined the 10th Battalion in Egypt on 28 February 1916. On 4 August 1916, he was promoted to Lance Corporal. He was killed in action on 22 August 1916, during the 10th Battalion’s attack on Mouquet Farm.
