Vignette 91: Advancing scientific research at Biobank
VIGNETTE
Standing at the forefront of scientific innovation, Biobank is a state-of-the-art ultracold biorepository established to centralise and securely house valuable biological and non-biological research materials.
Biobank, at the North Terrace campus, was established in 2014, and is a specialist facility equipped with 62 ultracold (minus 80 degrees) freezers. It preserves irreplaceable and valuable samples from past research, critical samples from current research and longitudinal materials for future research. The facility supports the University’s diverse research areas including cancer, diabetes, animal studies, plant biology, and seed preservation.
Security is paramount at the Biobank, with dual authentication required for entry, daily security walk-throughs, and restricted access to authorised staff. Approximately 160 research groups actively engage with the Biobank, highlighting its role in advancing scientific endeavours at the University.
