Vignette 79: Portrait of Kaurna Elder Uncle Rodney O'Brien
VIGNETTE
In 2022, the University unveiled its first portrait of a First Nations leader. Painted by Ngarrindjeri artist Thomas Readett, the portrait captures Kaurna Elder Uncle Rodney O’Brien standing next to the Wangu Pole sculpture at the Kaurna Learning Circle. Hanging in the Barr Smith Library, it serves as a powerful symbol of leadership, identity, and history.
A proud Kaurna man, O’Brien is an active member of the Adelaide Aboriginal community, dedicating significant time to supporting First Nations people in connecting with their language and culture. He also volunteers for organisations like Kaurna Warra Karrpanthi Aboriginal Corporation, Kura Yerlo Inc, and the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation.
Passionate about preserving and promoting Kaurna culture and language, O’Brien was nominated as the Australian of the Year 2021 SA Local Hero. An experienced professional he graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Aboriginal Community Development (Hons). He works tirelessly as the University’s Cultural Advisor to provide essential cultural support services and guides the University community.
As a significant addition to the University’s Visual Arts Collection, Uncle Rod O’Brien’s portrait marks a step towards recognising First Nations leaders.
