Vignette 68: From University Union to first female PM
VIGNETTE
In modern Australian history, the Hon Julia Gillard AC is an exemplar of leadership. Gillard’s journey, rooted in her early days as a student at the University, reflects a commitment to education, political activism, and to championing critical societal issues.
Gillard began studying law and arts at the University in 1979. Her engagement in student politics on campus, including serving as the president of the University Union, laid the groundwork for her future political leadership.
In 2013, the University appointed Gillard as an Honorary Visiting Professor of Politics in recognition of her outstanding contributions. In this role, Gillard shares her experience with the academic community, delivers an annual public lecture, and engages in seminars and the University’s internship program, bridging academia and real-world leadership.
In 2010, Gillard made history as Australia’s first female Prime Minister, implementing impactful policies in education, health, and workplace relations. She continues this work through her involvement with non-profit organisations and independent foundations. The Global Institute for Women’s Leadership was founded by Gillard in 2018.
Julia Gillard’s leadership, advocacy for education, and championing of mental health inspire and shape multiple sectors, making a lasting impact.
