A South Australian pioneer in beef cattle development, John Stanley Davies (1889–1968), left an indelible mark on agriculture.
Davies’ dedication to enhancing beef cattle strains has played a pivotal role in advancing animal science research at the University, and his bequest of a $2 million estate is a significant contribution.
The Davies Livestock Research Centre, established in 2016, reflects Davies’ commitment to excellence in livestock development. It focuses on improving sustainable animal productivity, product quality, and overall wellbeing through diverse fields such as genomics, nutrition, physiology, microbiology, mathematical optimisation and engineering.
This bequest has made the University a leader in animal science and livestock research, with Professor Mark Hutchinson’s work on pain and Professor Phil Hynd’s work on alternative shearing strategies which are showing promising breakthroughs.
