Involved in the flying of X-ray detectors on Skylark rockets from Woomera, South Australia in 1967-69, leading to the discovery that X-ray objects are highly time variable.

Awarded the Pawsey Medal (1969),the Gold Medal of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (1995), the Australia Prize (jointly) (1995), the Ian William Wark Medal (2001) and Haddon King Medal (2003) of the Australian Academy of Science. He was also made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1989.
