Mathematics Building
DESCRIPTION
NameMathematics BuildingType of PlaceBuildingLocationNorth Terrace CampusUnique IDUA-00007156Date1947Description
The Mathematics Building was constructed shortly after the end of the Second World War. The original completion date was set for sometime in 1946 but post war supply difficulties resulted in the building not being completed until 1947. Built using funds granted through the Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme (at a cost of £32,716) this three-storied building was the first separate building to be independently constructed within the University.
The Mathematics Building exhibits a degree of restraint and austerity of design common to much post-war construction (the Engineering Buildings are other prime examples). In size and treatment it is very similar to the Benham Laboratories that were built a few years earlier and like them its position aligned to form part of Walter Bagot’s grand design for the eastern area of the University.
