Vignette 20: The heart of Waite campus
Built in 1891, Urrbrae House was the home of Peter and Matilda Waite and one of the first homes in Adelaide to have electric light and advanced refrigeration technology. Following the passing of the couple in 1922, Urrbrae House was handed over to the University by their daughters, Lily and Eva Waite in 1923.
Throughout the years, Urrbrae House has served as the residence of Directors of the Waite Agricultural Research Institute and their families. In the 1990s, Urrbrae House and its gardens underwent a significant revitalisation, restoring its heritage charm while recognising its potential for community engagement.
Today, Urrbrae House is an accredited museum and the historic and cultural heart of the Waite Campus, providing a unique space for education and recreation.
