Vignette 4: An agricultural gift

Peter Waite (1834–1922), a significant South Australian benefactor, contributed greatly to the University and agricultural understanding. After arriving in South Australia in 1859, Waite became a pastoralist and managed extensive properties, embracing and developing innovative and contemporary farming practices.

In 1913, Waite gifted Urrbrae, a 54 hectare estate, to the University. Half the property was assigned to agricultural studies, and the remainder became a public park. In 1915, he donated the Claremont Estate, some of his Netherby Estate and shares in Elder Smith & Co. Ltd., to the University. The total value of these donations was estimated at £100,000, the equivalent of over $14 million today.

The establishment of the Waite Agricultural Research Institute in 1924 was a direct result of Peter Waite’s contributions, which extended to various public appeals and charitable donations, highlighting his enduring effect on South Australia and the advancement of agricultural education and research.
